Design as a Form of Optimism with Dominic Weilminster

Dot Dot Dot: The NINE dot ARTS Podcast
Episode 103

In a profession often associated with bold statements and iconic buildings, architect Dominic Weilminster makes the case for something quieter.

On this episode of dot dot dot, Dominic shares why some of the most meaningful design decisions come from knowing what not to add. From working within tight budgets to designing spaces that promote dignity and wellness, he explains how simplicity, thoughtful constraints, and careful listening often lead to stronger outcomes than endless creative freedom.

The conversation also explores his unlikely journey from journalism to architecture, why he believes design is fundamentally an act of optimism, and how public art can transform not just how a place looks, but how people experience and contribute to it over time. It’s a conversation about architecture, but even more so about leadership, empathy, and designing with purpose.
