The Story
Hyatt Regency Denver at the Colorado Convention Center features an expansive art collection that reflects the intersection of the High Plains with the Colorado Rocky Mountains and the vibrancy of Denver’s urban core.
Featuring 150 pieces of art in public spaces – the majority made by Colorado creatives – the art program at the hotel intends to honor Colorado’s unique blend of natural beauty and urban exploration.
In the market area, guests can enjoy artist Bill Starke’s “Climbers” installation, consisting of six cast aluminum and bronze figures trudging up the limestone wall, each pulling on ropes that converge at the top of the piece. In honor of the hotel’s servicing of several Colorado Convention Center events, the installation represents people coming together to work towards a common goal.
Local artist Tony Ortega’s paintings are placed throughout the hotel in a series called “Barrio Highland,” depicting scenes of the nearby Denver Highlands neighborhood. “I paint my surroundings,” says Ortega, “revealing the Mexican American experience through community, family, and individual slices of life in the many sectors of present day Mexican American society – both urban and rural.”
The hotel’s restaurant, Former Saint Craft Kitchen and Taps, was once the location of St. Mary’s Academy, which in the 1880s had an enrollment of about 125 students. Our team paid homage to this history by curating two historic photographs from the school, which closed in 1910.
These photographs are juxtaposed by a vibrant, modern mural splashed across the main wall of the restaurant featuring a colorful, geometric mountain scene that immediately energizes the space. Created by local artist Pat Milbery, the mural represents his signature style as an “inventor of joyful energy” who contributes color, vibrancy, and value to the community.
Also in the restaurant is a breathtaking hanging sculpture by Yellow Goat Design that was custom made to run the length of the dining room. This fixture was created with powder coated cut metal leaves in celebration of the famous Aspen leaves that adorn Colorado’s mountains in the fall and encourage the activity of “leaf peeping” that is beloved by both residents and tourists.
From hundreds of fine art prints to mixed media installations, sculptures, and photography, this captivating art collection evokes the spirit of a young, energetic, and growing city to create an unforgettable destination for locals and visitors alike.
