The Story
Professional photos by Partners in Design Inc.
For Husch Blackwell’s Kansas City office, we curated a refined art collection that celebrates the city’s layered history, creative legacy, and forward-thinking spirit. Rooted in Kansas City’s cultural identity, from its prairies and plains to its jazz heritage and baseball legacy, the collection reflects both a strong sense of place and the values of a nationally respected law firm with deep local roots.
25 local and regional artists are featured throughout the three-story office renovation, introducing texture, materiality, and storytelling through a wide range of media including mosaic, ceramics, hand-woven and hand-quilted textiles, blown glass, brass and wood sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, and collage.
Several works draw inspiration from Kansas City’s natural and cultural landscape, referencing prairie grasses, native flora, horses and cattle, and the region’s agricultural heritage. Additionally, the collection honor the city’s creative icons, including jazz, the United Negro League, Hallmark, and the early beginnings of Walt Disney’s career.
A large-scale mosaic commission in the reception area anchors the collection, symbolizing people coming together around a fountain (a nod to Kansas City’s identity as the “City of Fountains”) and was created by a husband-and-wife artist duo Jacob and Kasey Burmood, who embedded subtle self-portraits (even one of their dog!) and community references within the work.

Local textile artist Debbie Barrett-Jones was commissioned to create two large, hand-woven works for the reception area. These pieces were later photographed and digitally reinterpreted by the artist to produce secondary aluminum prints for conference rooms across multiple floors. Other highlights include small-scale wooden wall installations and framed “found botanicals” that bring in natural beauty and a sense of wellbeing to the office.
Together, the art collection enhances Husch Blackwell’s workplace experience while reinforcing the firm’s commitment to community, leadership, and honoring Kansas City.
